Urn on the Bowery, 1895

from 295.00

This urn lies in a green space behind the block of East 2nd street off the Bowery.  Literally in the backyard of the John Derian & Company stores on East 2nd.  In the site of an early cemetery in The Bowery, a broken funeral urn lies amongst overgrown weeds. Left over from a time when grand mansions and the occasional farmhouse populated the neighborhood, the land later became a city park. The image of this toppled monument is a poetic reminder of the ever changing city.
