Horse Carriage on the Avenue, 1895

Fanciful street lamps and barren trees are reflected in the wide rainy streets of uptown. The style of this unknown beat photographer is reminiscent of Henri Cartier-Bresson, and though the imagery brings to mind Belle Epoque Paris, signs directing carriage traffic for “business” and “pleasure” signal that this is a decidedly American scene.
