Heiress Elsie Mackay (Poppy) Working on Her Plane in Heels Shortly Before Her Death, 1920

Elsie Mackay was a silent film actress and British heiress who met a tragic demise while attempting to pioneer the world of aviation as the first woman to fly across the Atlantic Ocean on March 13, 1928.  This image of her in stylish high heels, climbing around the engine of her plane, suggests that she was perhaps dressed in a similar style, boldly flying across the Atlantic, when she died.
