Betty Russell, 1930

Betty's direct gaze at the camera, with her bangs tucked under her leather flying "helmet", stops me cold with it's beauty and fearlessness.  The fact these woman were out flying airplanes and clearly LOVED it from the look of her grin.  I can't imagine it's easy today for a woman to become a pilot and to be taken seriously when flying an airliner full of tourists, but in the 1930s?  I can't imagine.
