Akron Over New York Bay, 1932

from 315.00

The USS Akron passes over New York City on its first flight along the Atlantic Coast, floating silently above the working harbor with docks lining lower both Manhattan and Brooklyn, with boats streaming across the East River and the tip of Governor’s Island at the bottom of the frame. Just twenty feet shorter than the German airship Hindenburg, the Akron would meet a similar fate when it broke apart in a thunderstorm over New Jersey not long after this photo was taken.
